Don’t Be Without Light… A Clever Idea
A few months ago we had a lighting storm. It rained hard and we stood on our deck listening to the thunder and watching the lightening strikes in all their glory. We could feel them close enough to wonder if we were in any danger on the deck.
We didn’t have long to wait because about that time everything went black. We learned later that the power had come close enough to knock out a power source a few homes away.
It was only 8pm, and although storm-watching had been fun, now I had things to do. We went back inside to search for a flashlight to find ONE match to light ONE candle to find the lantern to have a small light to get around.
It was then we noticed a glow from the yard. Our Solar yard lights were lighting up the yard. It didn’t take long to figure out they would also light the house and were very portable.
I went to the yard, pulled up 4 of the lights and put them in quart jars. It was sufficient light to feel quite comfortable as we moved around planning our next move.
The power was on in a short time and by that time we had the makings of a plan. The next morning I started watching the sales on Solar Garden Lighting. I was surprised to find they are inexpensive. We bought a set on Sale for under $30 that was plenty durable for our purpose.
I had walked around my house before I went shopping and knew I needed 8. I wanted one for the stairs, 2 in the living room and1 each for the bathroom, kitchen and bedrooms.
It was fun seeing the lights around the garden. Next, I filled 8 mason jars with sand from the yard, put a lid on them and put them in a box in the garage. When the next storm hits my emergency light-source is ready. I’ll take the light sticks from the garden.. put them in the jars of sand and voila.. light. They’ll need to be charged daily outside in the sun … but they stay lit all night.
